The biggest preconception about the growth of Christianity is that people think they know what it is. And no one's taken that back, I think, to think about the sort of broad run of events and sequences of development which saw Christianity win in the first place. What it suggests, of course, is that Christianity might not have won. It didn't have to happen because it's not carried on winning ever since. The religion is very different in important ways between these different eras. You know, it's virtually unrecognizable apart from the fact they're all still reading the same holy texts but everything else around it has changed.
