Since they were being paid to participate in the sport through promotion, they were no longer amateurs. And this is what people were saying is like, 'You do not wants to open this can of worms' Now if you hear that from my ears, it sounds like they're talking about performance enhancing drugs,. But no, back then, Olympians were only allowed to be amateurs, not professionals at their sport.
