The Burned Over District

The term burned over district was coined by Charles Grandison Finney. The area had been so heavily evangelized that it had no more fuel left over to burn. At this time Western New York was still a frontier. This meant that professional and established clergy were scarce. Many of the people living there were self taught and susceptible to folk religion.
