The Transformation of Life in the Trenches
In 1914, when the first trenches were, they were ditches. The Germans have got a trench in front, say at the anor somewhere,. They get into the ditch and then they can't get any further forward. But it's still primitive. Now, later on, it gets to the stage I described earlier, so I don't need to do that again. Later on in the war, they start to get concrete, pillboxes, concrete, reinforced concrete bits. Often they have places they can sleep underground, awful places that probably, some of them still exist in the epsecta. And so life does change.
