Jewish Orthodox Judaism in the Late Roman Period
The synagogue dates to the late roman period, a few centuries after jesus. Most scholars believed that judaism was fairly monolithic in its oser is. But as we uncovered scene after scene of this mosaic what we realize is we have a community of jews that reflects a much greater diversity. And aspects of this mosaic floor even replicate temple es from the jerusalem temple in a way that later rabbis were not overly comfortable with.
