Science plays a much larger role in life than it did a hundred years ago, or 300 years. Science has been one of the main drivers of economic growthin country and most others. The community needs to think harder about how many graduate students they should train. Is it ok for graduate students to go and work in te data industry or financial industry? What is the optimum ratio of post o's to permanent positions? How do you distribute grants between large projects and small projects? And all that should be done in a context of zero real growth.
