The Importance of Institutions for Blind Children
The 19th century was really the heyday of institutions. People get sent away for seven years and don't come home again. I went to see one in America actually, which I thought was fascinating. Your whole day was completely dedicated to learning to be blind. The 19th century gave this idea that you take people away from the community. Now it's better to integrate people into a community and go to the same school as your fellow sighted friends.
