Pearl harbor has always been a byword for perfidy, and i don't think that's changed. It did dm japanese military prowess and planning and fortitude and courage but of course it had no meaning if they didn't have a strategic effect. And the strategic effect was disaster for japan. Was there a recognition of that in japan? Yes, there is, and there has been. The acceptance of american military decision making can be seen very clearly in the way in which JAPAN turned its back on militarism immediately.
