The Battle Fields of the Western Front
The british government took a decision quite early on tatthere would be no repatriation of bodies. A massive programme of clearing up the battlefields began, which in ivolved exhuming hundreds of thousands of bodies. And attempts were made to identify these dies, not always successfully by any means. Then they would be moved to a new purpose built cemetery where those that had been identified would be buried with their name on the headstone. Those bodies that were unidentified would be buried as, for example, unknown british e known unto god wol and who was given the responsibility of going across these battlefields.
