In the Second World War, technology was at a state where the tank had a hitting power. It could do damage to opposing tanks but most of all, it could act as a spearhead. They had to have infantry nearby, because if they hadn't got infantry nearby, they'd be ambush cut off and don't fall. As long as they worked together with infantry, then they could provide a mailed fist. And then they had the speed because all the backup equipment is motorised - in contrast to the German army which still relied a lot on horses.
