The Effect of Race on Risk Assessments

Eric Liu: I think when there isn't a structured information people see race as risk. And so what we actually found interestingly enough is that they didn't see the score. They were more likely to screen in that is investigate low risk black children. Why is that? Because when they saw that family they don't see much history. That's why that family has a low score, right? because they actually haven't been that involved in the system. So it's really fascinating how race plays subconsciously into how people are making assessments of risk and then how a tool like this can sort of counteract that.
