In America, textiles are so abundant that and the clothes you wear aren't your uniform for your station in life. That's something deep in the American culture. There are aristocratic cultures where the idea of actually talking to someone who's doing your nails would be beneath you. But that's not how it works in America. And I think that's one of the great things about American dynamism is that it encourages people to throw off these more traditional notions of station.
