What Is the Difference Between Europe and the Far East?
Spencer: Why do you think the fighting in Europe gets so much more attention than it does in the Far East? For us, of course, it was much more immediate. It was much more important. The level of brutality meted out against ordinary American troops and British troops by the Japanese was unsurpassed in the Second World War. And I think that's what gives the Pacific campaign, in particular, a compulsion when you're reading about it. But to answer your question, our focus was really on Western Europe for obvious reasons because that's where,. you know, the war mattered for us and for Americans, it was the Pacific.
