Scorsby wanted to see the Pacific before he died, and asked anthropological authorities at the British Museum what work there remained to be done. The only regular communication was a small sailing vessel sent out by the Chilean company who used the island as a ranch. As the Panama Canal was not open, and the route by Suez would be no longer, the way would lie through the Magellan Straits. It became clear that to get what we wanted we must build.
