The Importance of Metaphors in Judaism
I was a nice religious boy until I began to read. And that all changed. James, John Dewey, American pragmatism. They grabbed me. Also, Peter Berger and Brown. In some way, we have to develop new metaphors, new images of how we think about God. If the law doesn't point to a God, then what is it all about? Either God has a sense of humor, or he's not there. He's there and not there. It's like laughing at human beings' attempt to take life seriously. Snafu.
