In the book, you contrast academic capitalism as a model versus something that's more like a public good or a liberal learning regime. In the 70s, there was a push, a pretty concerted push, to move to that market-based notion of how should the federal government support higher education. So they chose to support it through student aid. And at the time, most of that student aid was grants and then some proportion of it was loans. But in the interim 40 years, the balance between grants and loans is completely reversed. That's why we have increased student debt.
