The Rise of the Military Welfare State

Today's US military is well resourced, well trained and well led. Many people today might take it for granted, but this is a very different thing than the US military's reputation half a century ago. The Reagan revolution was instituting what she calls the military welfare state. You go into the military, you get money for education, you get health care, increasingly they take care of the whole family, you get housing. And as Jennifer Middlestadt points out, right, all sorts of things that in the US, you only get if you join the military.
