Do Not Be Angry Without a Cause

Commentators say the meaning of the text is that we are never to wound a man's feelings, causelessly or use abusive language. They add that anger is not always unjust, and cite instances of the anger of the apostles and the saints. This clause entirely altered the sense of the saying, Do not be angry without a cause. But they were in the gospel, and I could not set them aside. The words without a cause destroyed the significance of the whole text for me. Never yet have I seen an angry man who did not consider himself perfectly just in his anger. Each thinks his anger, both lawful and necessary.
