The Importance of Scale in Ancient Cities
The scale of ancient cities is drastically different, their towns by today's standards. It seems strange almost in today's comparison, how did such small cities come to have such a significant impact? I think it comes down to ideas really, and also the way classical writers and historians have written about cities. The city could represent academic flourishing, intellectual curiosity, political brilliance, strategic importance. Cities became very important, and classical writers eulogized them and big them up in their texts.
