The History of Cathedrals in England
There must have been cathedrals in roman britain in the last century of it, in the three hundreds. But henry actually sat down and wrote an act of parliament saying that all cathedrals are to be preserved. The ones which had monks in were simply turned into the other sort of cathedrals with canons. They're fairly small buildings to start with but as they get better endowed their size increases.
