The History of Trial by Combat
The earliest actual codified writings that allow for trial by combat date back to the Lex Alimanorum. Joining was a private affair, often illegal, which took place outside the confines of the law. Despite its supposedly religious justifications, the Catholic Church was never a big supporter of trial by combat. England got rid of trial by ordeal in 1219 and replaced it with trial by jury.
