Photographs that have survived are really remarkable. I mean, the expressions on the face of many of the workers who were photographed really kind of captured my attention and made me start to wonder, you know, how is it possible that this world existed in a world of such extremes? You'll see pictures of these emaciated workers right next to pictures of extraordinarily dense forests or photos of deep ravines that had to be crossed with bridges.
