The book is about a soldier who was disfigured during the First World War. After his surgery, he went back to work as a tailor's assistant. His fiancee ended their engagement because she didn't want him to frighten customers. He eventually met up with gillies again and they fell in love. The author hopes that people will take away some of her inspiration from this story.
