In the past, mathematics at school was actually a rather daunting experience. There is so much emphasis on the nuts and bolts of doing the mats that nobody gets told why they're doing it. The real problem with mathematics is the way it builds, step by step on everything you've done for it's very hard to jump in afresh at some higher level. Once you're lost, you say lost.
