After the opium war, china was sceptical of anything that comes in the west. The danes came up with the first set of telegraphic code for the chinese. They didn't do it in the order that the chinese would hipip to use. And so begame very awkward and prone to lots and lots of airrs. Telegrapy was not taking numbers from antena - just dots and dashes. It took several steps: you have to look up the letter li in a morse code then tap it out on receiving end,. Then try to go through the process in reverse.
