Raskolnikov was studying the law when he heard a loud voice below. He went to meet them, but they could not open the door. The key was in the lock on the inside and so nothing could be seen. They were only a flight from him. And suddenly, deliverance. A few steps from him, on the right there was an empty flat with the door wide open. There was no sound. Abruptly, without any thought at all, he went out, closed the door as thoroughly as he could, and went downstairs.
