What Is This Wrong Looking Bird on the Cover?
The bird is a rufus hornbow. It's a bird that was collected in the Philippines during an expedition that Edgar Mearns led in 1906. I think we can see sort of evidence of violence in ways that might be hard to see with a smaller bird or study skin. And so I think in some ways, this image is sort of telegraphing some of the bigger questions about where we look for empire and what that might look like.
