There are a couple of competing theories about how he ends up being called herrywood the wake. It might have been meant to mean something like the watchful, because of his ability to avoid capture so often and to live all these adventures. The other theory is that it may refer to the wake family who moved over to lincolnshire and took up some lands inborn that have been traditionally associated with herrywood as part of his inheritance.
