The US is instilled in some ways in Empire, but we're no longer a frontier settlement in Pyre. And so what do you do after that? The answer was called the American dream, social mobility and then creating a welfare state. But somewhere around the Reagan administration or specifically during the Reagan administration, we took a turn. Trump is legitimating and continuing this Reagan turn where you give up on social mobility to make everybody better off.
