The Silk Rods by Peter Frankpan
A lot of this book takes place outside what we used to calla western christan when i was growing up. I think, again, 50 years ago, this book would have gone from the west coast of ireland to the danube. And in some ways, it shifted paradises for popular history because peter frankpan's silk rods sold like hot cakes and showed that it was possible to write this kind of world history for a mas market. So anyone approaching a big, epic work of history over a long period has to draw confidence and inspiration from that book.
