The Most Common Causes for Failed Primary Total Neartroplasty
Antibiotic-loaded bone cement is only indicated for those at high risk of infection with primary and revision total joint arthroplacies. Want, et al. looked at 2,293 patients that underwent primary total knee arthroplasty with a one-year follow-up. Ten patients were identified that had deep infections with no difference between plain cement and antibiotic-laden cement. The use of highly cross-linked polyethylene inserts has been shown to significantly reduce the complications from polyethylene wear.
