How the Police Started Carrying Guns in the 18th Century

In the 18 eighties and 18 nineties, thousands of police officers in england did carry guns. Some british police still are armed but most aren't. What has changed is the degree of formality about who's armed and who isn't. And so when there's a lot of fire arm around, police feel they need more firearms.
