"The downtown East side is a village dysfunctional. Yes, poverty stricken certainly ugly and sad almost everywhere," she says. "But it is still a community where most people know one another." The women who went missing during these decades had families that loved them and counted on them. And they counted on one another too, which is why when some of them didn't call when they were supposed to or show up for dinner in the first place.
