Back in the day, empirical studies of science weren't the main way to answer questions. It was mostly thinking in your head about things that made sense to you. And then they would argue about them. A lot of the ways scientific disputes used to be resolved was people arguing about it and then say, well, that makes no sense. So it can't be true.
