The Motivations for the Franco-Prussian War
Bismarck was seeking to unify Germany under a strong monarch, namely William. He coveted the territories of Alsace and part of Laurent which he believed to be historically part of Germany. Second, it was an opportunity to build the sense of nationalism among the German people. Even though the war started as a war between imperial leaders, it became a war in which ordinary Germans, ordinary French people became engaged on a much more nationalistic level.
