In the early twentieth century, about as many working aged black men and white men were employed in the early 20th century. After that there was a complete collapse of agriculture, and the american economy basically never replaced those jobs for african Americans. And that, i think, is the underlying cause of the social problems and the racial divisions in morkin class that you see throughout 20 sentury.
