As more rigorous studies were done, the core claims on which mirror neurons rested began to falter. Further research revealed that while mirror neurons might help you perceive and imitate someone's gestures, they can't do the crucial mind-reading work once thought. The strongest findings on mirror neurons is how they contribute to the imitation of bodily movements. But mirror physical imitation has little to do with sensing or mirroring the emotional states of others.
