The Origins of the San Jose Scale

The San Jose scale is considered to be the first major Asian biological invasion. John Henry Comstock discovered it on some fruit orchards in Santa Clara Valley around 1880. It spread rapidly across the US, and its popular name became pernicious scale. The scale triggered a whole host of quarantines worldwide that still exist today.
