Introduction

Stephen Kotkin was Walter McDougall's TA in the Plato-Tinato class, as it used to be called. He is now a professor of history and international affairs at Princeton University. His first book on Soviet dictator Stalin was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Steve Kotkin also co-founded a series of books on Northeast Asia.
