I think the term alcoholic dooms the afflicted. It classifies the disease as incurable. No one can truly define are you an alcoholic, but you. And that just puts us in this weird purgatory of not feeling safe questioning our own behavior. Another reason is I think that the term alcoholic dangerously necessitates a rock bottom.
