When you're pregnant your estrogen level, the female hormone rise really high. It helps to keep hairs in their growth phase for longer. And then when estrogen drops after you give birth, all of those extra hairs that were maintained in the growth phase during pregnancy then shed all at once in quite a short period of time. So but it's not just as simple as that. There are so many things that occur during pregnancy that can exacerbate postpartum hair shedding and also cause it to go on for longer than it should. Things like iron deficiency, ferritin, other vitamin and mineral deficiencies that commonly occur during pregnancy aren't rectified postpartum.
