Roo's Embassie Is Not the Way to Go in India
Rooji's map of India becomes the primary kind of visual image of India for over a century after him. His perception of what he might define as the Indian character or the Mughal character becomes the defining narrative against which the British Empire negotiates its own engagements. He basically says repeatedly throughout his embassy that traffic or trade and war are mutually incompatible. The Hindus and the Muslims at Jahangis called speak to each other. The Mughal emperor marries into Hindu families. Roo finds that fascinating, strange but fascinating.
