After the Second World War, Britain might have been battered and living in austerity. But people still believed that they could protect themselves against attack from an enemy. The government tried to carry that feeling on into the nuclear era. Of course, that's when the massive hydrogen bomb came along. Nothing at all can protect you from that. As they say, the only defence is not to have one.
