Jesse Tarbox Beals was the nation's first female news photographer. When she applied for an official press pass, at the fair, she was denied. She went back to the fair officials with more ammo in the form of her past work and totally wore them down. The next day after she was hired a headline in the local St. Louis newspaper read, "Woman gets permanent to take pictures at the fair"
