TWiEVO 82: A genetic hack for the human brain
This Week in Evolution

The Role of Genes in Neuronal Development
Vincent: Could our own genetics, our own genetic change in some of these genes that encode the proteins that are involved in the activity or the action of these cells? Could these really be in play here as well? Vincent: We know humans make more of these BRGs relative to mice and other mammals. But if you look at position 317, it's a lysine in the amino acid in Neanderthals, other primates, but in humans, it's an arginine. And so that's pretty unusual that there was a mutation in humans sort of a genetic hack, potentially random mutation that could have had some beneficial consequences for evolutionary story.
