I think what we're seeing here is not technological change or a massive shift in modes of communication but the fact that slang and habits of chit chat evolve. The millennial generation which felt like it owned the internet for so long because it was the first generation to truly grow up natively online I think seems like it's really wrestling with the fact that the internet changes every you know 18 months. It can be spun by right wingers as trivial and juvenile and overly demanding and like morally sensitive to a degree that gives being moral a bad name, he says. He also points out how creatively and differently different people use emojis in ways that have nothing to do with their generation.
