Cassidy was a vital link between two different versions of the counterculture. He was regarded as a peer by Ken Keesy, Alan Ginsburg, Jack Kerouac and Jerry Garcia. Cassidy had been a petty criminal for a great part of his youth. The post-style which made Kerowak famous was in large part an imitation of Cassidy's style. In 1962, Cassidy read Ken Kesey's novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. By this time Kesey was a strong advocate for the use of LSD.
