Without the music, it simply wouldn't have evolved in the same way or anywhere near to the same extent. The Beatles embrace many of the trappings of the counterculture and through them that reaches people who would otherwise never have experienced it. Interestingly though, the Beatles are not actually a particularly typical counterculture band. It's about the unifying force. That is along with Vietnam, that is what unifies the entire movement. In that big jumble of ideas that ranges from saying the chairman Mao has the answers to everything through to people interested in Hindu ideas of reincarnation. This is the one thing you can come together on.
