The Federal Government's Response to the Sanctuary Movement
I assumed it was illegal. I could not claim to be a Christian and not be involved in trying to protect refugees' lives. So if you put yourself in the shoes of the police back then who are dealing with Fife and his church, you can enforce the law or you don't do your job. And so what did the police do? The federal government launched an undercover investigation. They set paid informants into the churches wearing wires. Even tape-recorded worship services in our churches. To try to record Fife and my allies planning, bringing people across the border...They were successful. But none of them actually served any prison time. Most got probation.
