Mikayo Gorbachev came in in 1985 and said from the beginning he was going to open up a society with this kind of twin slogans of Glaznost and Peristroika. The economic problems that the GDR had as a result of the collapse of the Eastern Bloc were staggering it's hard to see how they would have got past those. Even the most vocal critics of the regime even the most vocal ones on the whole are still arguing for reform of the GDR rather than reunification with Germany. So do you think it was this outdated leadership that ultimately led to the collapse of East Germany in 1989?
